Preaching Training Course

From time-to-time our Minister leads a course that provides the opportunity for Church Members to explore practically whether they may have the spiritual gifting that would enable them to become a preacher of God’s Word. Those who are deemed to have this gift are then encouraged to use it within the ministry of the Church. This is the only means by which new preachers can join the Preaching Team.

Subjects covered in the training include: The Preacher’s Example, The Place and Purpose of Preaching, Listening to God, Understanding the Text, Applying the Sermon, Stopping and Starting, Consecutive Preaching and Presentation.

There is not currently a Course taking place. Details of any subsequent courses will be posted here, once arrangements have been made.

Important points to note include:

  • This Course is only for Members (of either gender) of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
  • Participants will be required to attend all sessions of the Course.
  • Participants will be expected to undertake the homework studies that are set.
  • At a given point, participants may be invited to preach in a Church worship service, although not necessarily on a Sunday morning to begin with.

At a later time, and having preached a set number of times, the names of participants will be put to the Church Members’ Meeting, where the decision will be taken as to whether or not they are appointed for three years to the Preaching Team.

The Mission-Shaped Ministry Course (MSM)

The Mission Shaped Ministry Course provides an exciting opportunity for Christians from any church or denomination to learn together how to engage in “a lifetime of good practice and learning in planting and sustaining fresh expressions of church.” It is currently being offered in two venues in Kent, with West Kent meetings predominantly being held on Monday evenings, and located at Bluewater. The ecumenical Course tutors include Kerry Thorpe, Jean Kerr, Penny Marsh, Debbie Hodgson, Geoff Cook and Rob Ryan.

Look here for details of the next Course, due to be launched in September 2016.

Modules in the MSM Course include:

  • Mission context
  • The mission of God
  • Vision, values and call
  • Starting something new
  • What is church?
  • Gospel and behaviour
  • Discipleship
  • Evangelism
  • Spirituality, worship and the sacraments
  • Growing to maturity

The cost of the Course is £250 per person, which covers all materials, refreshments and the weekend away.

An Apologetics Discussion Group for Thinking Christians

We are hoping to run a discussion group in Christian Apologetics later this year, and which probably will be held on Tuesday evenings.

The group will meet for ten sessions, each of which will be based on a book called “On Guard” by William Lane Craig. Participants will need to purchase both the book and the Study Guide in order to be able to read in advance each week’s designated material, and then contribute to the discussion within the group. These two books cost approximately £17 together.

The topics that will be covered in the sessions are:

  • What is apologetics?
  • What difference does it make if God exists?
  • Why does anything at all exist?
  • Why did the universe begin?
  • Why is the universe fine-tuned for life?
  • Can we be good without God?
  • What about suffering?
  • Who was Jesus?
  • Did Jesus rise from the dead?
  • Is Jesus the only way to God?

If you are keen to take part in the group (and we will probably have to limit the group to about 10 maximum), please send an e-mail to the Church Office in order to register your interest.

Christianity Explored

The Church is expecting to run the Christianity Explored course before too long. It will probably be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church’s Windmill Street Church Centre. Each session will begin at 7.30pm and conclude by 9.00pm, with the course lasting seven weeks.
Christianity Explored takes you through the shortest and most straight-forward of the New Testament Gospels (Mark’s Gospel) and enables you to examine who Jesus is, why he came, and how you can follow him today.
