For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:13-14.

Alabama has moved to toughen its abortion laws and a celebrity has called for women to go on a sex strike. Anything to do with abortion causes extreme responses and reasonable discussion and argument is often abandoned. The issue is hugely divisive and in America at least, can lead to aggression and violence. I am not a supporter of Conservative American politics, but we have reached the stage in Britain where to disagree with received human wisdom on matters of human sexuality puts you beyond the pale and earns some unpleasant name calling. The fact that this matter was discussed on Radio 4 and only people with pro-abortion views were asked to speak hints at the fact that only one view is expected. We are in the strange position in which society is outraged when an infant outside of the womb is killed by its parents, but think it is completely acceptable for an infant inside the womb to be ‘terminated’, because it is unwanted and not considered viable. When do children become viable? And at the other end of life, why don’t we ‘terminate’ non-viable adults? I’m not a Catholic either, but as Christians perhaps we need to consider their whole life theology and re-appraise where we stand on this matter.
