“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”  Luke 18:16

These are familiar words spoken by Jesus, and the incident they record, appears in Matthew, Mark and Luke’s gospels. Some very important points are made, as I’m sure I’ve said before. First of all, children are not to be side lined or treated as second class, because they are children. The Bible treats children as a gift from God and a blessing. We will be aware of the pain and anguish of people who cannot have children, and this is illustrated in the stories of Sarah, Leah and Hannah in the Old Testament. Jesus reinforces the value of children as he welcomes them and blesses them. Secondly, they show the way into the Kingdom of God: dependency. Just as children are dependent upon their parents for love and nurture as they grow, so we are dependent upon God for the gift of life and the gift of forgiveness through Jesus. Following this account a man comes to Jesus with a very different attitude. Look it up to see. We celebrate with Zane and Nicole for the gift of Angelique. As she looks to her mum and dad for all that she needs, are we willing to follow her example and look to God our Father?
