There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:28,29
The human race is very good at creating barriers and divisions – it always has been. People want to assert themselves over others, for whatever reason. Often superiority has been asserted on the basis of race and education. I was listening to a radio programme this week about Alexis Carrel, a French scientist from the early 20th Century who was the fore runner of transplant technology. However, he wanted to use his technology to ensure the supremacy of Western civilisation – and only those worthy of living. The weak, the vulnerable and those of the wrong race or thinking were to be eliminated. Religion, as we know, has also been used as a means of asserting superiority and dominance. Sadly Christianity is no stranger to this form of thinking. However, if we really are followers of Jesus, we see in his life that barriers were broken down and it was the superior who were challenged. Followers of Jesus, above all others should be those who transcend the barriers humankind erects. We are one in Christ Jesus.
