The beginning of a New Year always causes people to stop and think about where they are going and what they want to achieve. So what is your life’s purpose as we enter 2020? Many find this a difficult question to answer. I would suggest that many people would not know what their life’s purpose is. They would say there is no purpose; you just do what you do. Some would have a very clear sense of their life’s purpose. For the Christian there is no need to be confused or in doubt. Our life’s purpose perhaps can be summed up in these words from Jesus: ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’ Matthew 5:14-16. Jesus came to be a light to the gentiles, revealing the glory of God to them and bringing them into his kingdom. We are those through whom Jesus has chosen to fulfil this mission. Our world is restless and people want to do everything, be everything and have everything before they die. We can succumb to the same mindset, if we are not careful.. As Christians we can learn from Simeon and Anna. Their worth and value was centred on who they were in their relationship with God. They had found peace and security in God their creator and saviour; their purpose was to glorify him. As we enter 2020, let’s ask the Holy Spirit to fill us for this purpose.
